Most people in Myanmar are Buddhist rather than Christian. Yet, there has been a Christian presence in Myanmar for centuries now, and Christmas Day is celebrated each year with a public holiday on 25 December.

Both Christians and non-Christians alike in Myanmar often celebrate the Advent season in ways that are much like how Christmas is celebrated in the rest of the world.
Hotels, restaurants, shopping malls, and any place that attracts a lot of Western tourists will be sure to do Christmas up big, using flashy, bright decor in bulk to catch the eye of passers-by. It’s a kind of advertising of sorts.
But even non-Christians often put up trees, stars, nativity sets, lights, Santa Claus statues, and more in and in front of their home or office. So it’s not just in the public square that Christmas has spread in Myanmar. However, it is generally only Christians who are likely to attend special church services and masses on Christmas Day.
