The main benefit of Nijamati Sewa Diwas is that it is an extra day off work for Nepal’s public servants. It is always made to fall on what would have been a working day and may have to be moved slightly if it doesn’t with the 7 September date. However, not all civil servants get the day off every year. Instead, the central government rotates which ministries get the holiday that year.
The tradition of Nijamati Sewa Diwas began in 1956, and with over 80,000 civil servants now working throughout Nepal, it has become more significant than ever before. And not only do many get the day off work to spend time with family or go on a mini-vacation, but awards and prizes are given out too. These awards are meant to recognise and honour exceptional public servants in every sector and to encourage others to follow their good example.
