International Women’s Day in Turkmenistan is held every 8 March to celebrate the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. It is also a day used to highlight ongoing gender inequality and to call for further change.

Unlike in some Muslim countries, where women’s roles in society are heavily restricted, this has never been the case in Turkmenistan.
The Turkmenistan president appears at a major honourary event for this holiday each year, gives a speech, and then bestows awards, titles, and cash gifts on “worthy women”. There are also beauty pageants, arts and craft exhibits, song and dance competitions, and other popular events scheduled for Women’s Day.
While women in rural areas tend to stay at home, those in the cities are often more independent and have their own careers. And the overall position of women in Turkmenistan is relatively positive.
