New Year’s Day is a time of resolutions and starting fresh for some, while for others it is spent recovering from a big, late night spent with friends and family.
The culture of Tokelau, called “Faka-Tokelau” or “the Tokelau way of life”, is very much centred on family and local communities. This comes out strong during holiday celebrations, including for New Year’s Eve and Day. Close families, distant relatives, neighbours, and friends all come together to celebrate in local villages on small islands and throughout Tokelau.
There are also small, local events. You may see some fireworks and firecrackers going off. And some may spend the holiday weekend on the beach. New Year’s feasts are a highlight of the season, and everyone eats their fill. Fish and coconuts, as always, will take their place at the party table!
