Timor-Leste is a small, mostly Roman Catholic nation surrounded by Muslim Indonesia. Immaculate Conception Day is on the holiday calendar here.

Catholic traditions have Mary being conceived by her mother Saint Anne – her father being Saint Joachim, on 8 December. The doctrine states that she was preserved from all sin from the moment of her conception and throughout her entire life. This is thought necessary by Roman Catholics in order that Jesus would also be born without sin.
In Dili, Timor-Leste, many gather at the 2,000-capacity Immaculate Conception Metropolitan Cathedral on 8 December for special services. Though built only in the 1980s, the cathedral is very historic since it played a major role in Timor-Leste’s independence movement.
