New Year’s Day is a time of resolutions and starting fresh for some, while for others it is spent recovering from a big, late night spent with friends and family.
Samoa is the first country to enter the new year, given its position along the International Date Line. Along with Tonga and Kiribati it shares this unique privilege of being the first to finish its New Year’s Eve countdown at midnight each year.
It’s possible to travel just over the International Date Line to American Samoa in order to celebrate the arrival of the new year twice! It’s only a one-hour flight.
You will find colourful fireworks shows in Samoa on New Year’s Eve, the colours often reflecting off the ocean’s waters just below. Some may use part of their new year’s break to visit the beach, barbecue, or visit nature reserves throughout the country. Others may choose to just relax at home, thoroughly clean out the house, or do some gardening.
