Christmas in Niue is celebrated with a public holiday every 25 December, as it is in a majority of countries around the world. This Christian festivity commemorates the birth of Jesus, and is part of a 22-28 day season in the Christian calendar known as Advent.

Niue is a popular location for people to spend Christmas abroad. Many from New Zealand, the UK, Asian countries, and elsewhere, flock there for the resorts and festive events. But it is also a prominent holiday for the locals of Niue as well. Both Christmas Day and the day after, Boxing Day, are public holidays in Niue.
Niue locals generally attend Christmas mass or church services on Christmas Day. These services are noted for their local choirs that sing harmony-rich Christmas songs and carols. Many tourists attend such services to hear the sound of Niue culture.
Locals also traditionally enjoy a “faikai” dinner, which has coconut-soaked fish chunks as its main dish. Taro root and coco-bread are common side dishes. And there are also culinary delicacies on display at local village shows and available for consumption in Niue restaurants!
