Every 1 May is Labour Day in Myanmar, as it is in many other countries around the world. This holiday is also called “May Day” or “Worker’s Day”.

The origins of Labour Day go back to the labour struggles of the late 1800’s in the United States and then in certain European countries. But the idea quickly spread to other lands. For a long time, the day was called International Worker’s Day and was closely associated with Socialistic political leanings. But today, it is usually simply a day off and a day to fight for improved working conditions. It may also be a time to celebrate the arrival of spring in some countries.
There are official Labour Day events and ceremonies in Yangon, the capital of Myanmar, on 1 May. And as Myanmar has recently undertaken serious labour reforms in their “Organisation of Labour Law”, the ideas of workers’ rights and of fighting for a fair wage and decent working conditions are fresh on the minds of many in Myanmar.
