Labour Day is an official public holiday in the Maldives. It is generally observed on 1 May, but if it falls on a Friday or Saturday, which are weekend days in Muslim countries, the holiday is observed either on the preceding Thursday or the following Sunday. This creates a three-day weekend for workers who appreciate a longer break.

Maldivian labour law also requires that if someone has to work on a national holiday, he or she must be given 150 percent of their normal pay rate. Otherwise, they get a paid day off at their regular pay rate.
Sadly, there are reports of extensive child and forced labour problems in The Maldives. These are obviously issues that Labour Day reform efforts need to focus on in this country.
