Christmas Day is a public holiday each year in Macau due to the area’s rich Portuguese and Catholic heritage. The holiday usually falls on 25 December.

Christmas is less celebrated in mainland China than in Macau and Hong Kong, since the latter two were long under Western control and influence. Plus, in Macau, there is a Catholic community that took root during its time as a Portuguese colony.
The more religiously inclined in Macau will attend Christmas mass or another Christmas church service. Some may even attend a midnight mass on Christmas Eve to welcome the dawning of Christmas morning.
But most Christmas events in Macau are engaged in by Christians and non-Christians alike. These include colourful parades with Christmas characters in them, shopping malls and squares decked out with a Christmas tree and other seasonal decor, resorts and restaurants catering to Western Christmas dinner traditions, and a host of festive shows and concerts.
