International Women’s Day in Kyrgyzstan is held every 8 March to celebrate the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. It is also a day used to highlight ongoing gender inequality and to call for further change.

This is a day to honour all women you know and respect, often by giving them flowers and gifts. And everyone greets the women they see, even if total strangers. Sometimes, presents are even given to strangers just because they are women and it’s Women’s Day.
There are also special fundraising drives and other events meant to raise awareness of women’s issues and gather funds to fight for women’s equality.
The government of Kyrgyzstan funds an annual mega-party, called a “Mehr Shavkat”, which is a Women’s Day party dedicated to women who have made contributions to bettering their local communities. There, the women honoured get public recognition for their service to the public good.
