In 1991, right after the fall of the USSR, Kazakhstan adopted its first constitution as an independent nation. But as this first attempt was done somewhat in haste and was deemed to be lacking, a new constitution was passed by referendum in 1995. It has been amended in 1998 and in 2007, the latest amendment being more far-reaching.
Today, Kazakhstan is a secular state with a president and a parliament. Its constitution helped create a stable environment politically as well as significant economic improvement.
On Constitution Day, there are cultural events all over the country. There is dancing, singing, and street-partying, besides fireworks displays. Astana, the capital city, is the centre of the festivities.
