The Assumption of Mary has been a church tradition since at least the 4th Century A.D., but it was not an officially recognised Catholic dogma until the 1950 declaration of Pope Pious XII.

Many Catholics see the taking up of Mary and her heavenly glorification as a prelude to the eventual resurrection and glorification of all the saints. Some call Assumption Day Mary’s “Heavenly Birthday”. Most take the time to attend church on Assumption Day to hear about Mary’s life and assumption and their meaning to the present-day Catholic faith.

To others, however, Assumption Day is more of just a time off work and out of school to have fun and spent time with family and friends. They may go swim and sun themselves at the beach, hike or explore national parks, go shopping, or just spend time relaxing at home.
