The Republic of Vanuatu is an island nation in the South Pacific. Vanuatu celebrates 14 national holidays each year. Under the National Holiday Acts legislation, the Office of the President holds the authority to add additional one-time national holidays throughout the year. There is no limit to how many days can be added.
The National Holidays Act also gives the government the authority to move holidays that occur on a Sunday to the following Monday for observance. If that Monday is also a holiday, the celebration date is moved to the following Tuesday for an extended holiday period.
The Labor Laws of Vanuatu provide employees with a paid day off for all nationally recognised holidays. If an employee is required to work on the holiday based on their job duties, the government requires that the employee receive a paid day off in lieu of the holiday or the employee is paid at a premium rate for hours worked on the holiday.
Most holidays in Vanuatu are on specific days each year. However, there are a few holidays that occur on different dates each year because their celebrations are calculated using a lunar calendar. The government of Vanuatu requires that employers acknowledge these holidays regardless of when they occur each year.
The government of Vanuatu may require all businesses to be closed on specific holidays. The only exceptions to these are emergency services and some public functions. All businesses must adhere to these requests by the government or face severe fines.
There are over 130 languages spoken, and many people remain in tribal settings. Each of these groups has their own special celebrations. The government of Vanuatu recognises these special days but does not recognise them as national holidays.
